Goalkeeper Danielle Krzyzaniak makes 3 saves in her first start of the season, Mia Fontana makes her Northern Super League debut
Toronto, ON (May 10, 2026) – AFC Toronto suffered their first loss of the season on Sunday afternoon, falling 1-0 to Montreal Roses FC at BMO Field. Toronto remains in fourth place in the Northern Super League table with four points and a 1-1-1 record.
AFC Toronto came out hard, with strong early chances from Kaylee Hunter and Lauren Rowe, who made her first start of the season Sunday. Toronto kept pushing in the second half, but ultimately couldn’t convert. Late in the half, Montreal managed to break through to take the win.
“I thought we played well enough to score one, maybe even two goals,” said head coach Marko Milanović. “Tough one, definitely, because I thought we deserved more, but at the same time you have to take your chances. I don't think that's luck, we just need more quality in front of goal.”
AFC Toronto now have a week off before hitting the road to face Vancouver Rise FC on Saturday, May 23 at 4 p.m. ET.
DANIELLE KRZYZANIAK: Earning her second career start and first of the season, goalkeeper Danielle Krzyzaniak made three saves for Toronto.
MIA FONTANA: Subbing in on the 80th minute, Mia Fontana made her AFC Toronto debut on Sunday afternoon. The 24-year-old American forward signed with the club last month.
HEAD-TO-HEAD: AFC Toronto now hold a 3-0-3 record against Montreal Roses FC in the regular season. Last year, Toronto added two wins over Montreal in the NSL semi-finals.

More from the locker room:
Milanović, on the team being shutout: “I think we're getting into our spots. Take a look at how many times we were in their box today. I think it would be much more concerning to me if we weren't getting in those spots. We are there and then we are creating those chances. I think it's quality at times, timing, a little bit of luck sometimes as well. I know we don't want to say luck was the cost for our missing chances, but that also plays a factor as well. So as long as we're creating chances we're going to score goals I'm sure.”
Milanović, on Kaylee Hunter’s performance: “I think today was her best game this year. I think the first two games, she wasn't at her best. We obviously expect so much from her. She showed everyone how good of a player she was last year and she's better this year. Coming back from the national team, sometimes it's difficult with the travel, with the different types of training, because they're playing so many games in a short period of time. The training looks very different, so obviously your form will dip a little bit, especially when you're not getting a lot of minutes with the national team. So all that is a factor in it. I'm sure she's feeling a little bit of pressure as well because last year she came in and nobody really knew who she was. Now goals are expected of her, but I thought she played really well today. She carries it all really well and really proud of her.”
Milanović, on Lauren Rowe’s performance in her first start of the year: “I thought she had a lot of energy. I thought she did some good things. I think she could have probably ran in behind a little bit more. She's very fast, as you guys know, and I thought there were opportunities to run behind a few more times. … She could have used that a little bit more, that part of her game.”
Milanović, on the decision to start Krzyzaniak, amidst an injury to Sierra Cota-Yarde: “Dani has been great and very deserving, as you saw today. She’s more than capable of playing.”
Danielle Krzyzaniak, on earning her first start of the season: “I feel like the coaching staff and just the girls prepare us for that. It's part of the position as well, we just always have to be ready. So I felt calm and good. The girls were nothing but supportive with that. … It felt good, but hope to get the result next time.”
Colby Barnett on the physicality of the match: “I think anytime we play Montreal, it's always a pretty physical battle, especially this year. It seems like they play a similar system to us now, so it is a very man-on-man battle. Yeah, it kind of plays into some of our strengths. I think we could have maybe done a little better on the defensive side though, winning those second or third balls.”
