The AFC Toronto captain has emerged as one of the league's most influential midfielders, leading the NSL in tackles while setting the standard for leadership on and off the pitch.

There is a reason football is often said to be won and lost in the midfield. It is where the tempo is set, battles are fought and games are controlled. For AFC Toronto, Nikki Small has made that space her own.

The club captain has been a commanding presence throughout the 2026 season, combining her physicality and defensive instincts with an increasingly influential leadership role. Her performances have earned her a place on the NSL Team of the Season, recognition that reflects just how important she has become to the team.

The numbers tell a compelling story. Small finished the season leading the entire league with 124 tackles, 33 more than the next closest player. It is a remarkable margin and a testament to her ability to disrupt opposition attacks, win possession and set the tone in the middle of the pitch.

But her impact is not limited to her defensive contributions. Small also recorded two goals and three assists this season, demonstrating her ability to influence play at both ends of the field.

Perhaps just as significant has been her growth as a leader.

Stepping into the captaincy has brought new responsibilities, but Small has embraced the opportunity to lead a group she describes as a joy to be part of. Her leadership style is built on consistency, composure and an unwavering commitment to improvement.

Reflecting on her season, Small acknowledged the growth that has come with taking on a new role.

"Stepping into a new role of leader and captain on this team, there's been a lot of growing pains, but I think overall it's been fun. And honestly, leading this team is a blast," she said.

It is a style of leadership that Head Coach Marko Milanovic has regularly praised. Calm, collected and steadfast, Small brings a reassuring presence to the team, rarely allowing the pressure of a moment to dictate her approach.

Her focus is simple: get better every day.

"One thing that I really tried to focus on is being one per cent better each and every practice and each and every game," she said.

That mindset has translated into performances that make her one of the league's most impactful players. Whether breaking up an opposition attack, driving the team forward or setting the standard for those around her, Small is at the centre of so much of what AFC Toronto does.

For a captain, leadership is often measured by what happens beyond the moments of recognition. Small's 2026 season has demonstrated both her individual quality and her ability to bring those around her along.

With her influence growing both on and off the pitch, Small continues to define what it means to lead AFC Toronto.
