TORONTO, ON (September 30, 2026) – AFC Toronto returns to York Lions Stadium on Sunday, October 4, for Newcomer Day, presented by Toyota with plenty on the line as the club continues its race for the Supporters’ Shield. The match will double as both a regular season match against Vancouver Rise FC and a Canadian Championship quarterfinal, with a spot in the semifinals and qualification for the Concacaf W Championship Cup on the line.
The Race for the Supporters’ Shield
With AFC Toronto having clinched a playoff spot with a 3-0 win over the Ottawa Rapid FC on September 26, the club turns its attention to the Supporters Shield. With re FC Toronto enters the final stretch of the regular season still in the race for the Supporters’ Shield. With the regular season nearing its conclusion, every point matters as AFC Toronto looks to close out the campaign strongly and secure its position heading into the playoffs.
A Spot in the Concacaf W Champions Cup
Sunday's match also marks a significant moment in the inaugural W Canadian Championship, Canada's new domestic cup competition featuring all six Northern Super League clubs alongside two clubs from Premier Soccer Leagues Canada.
The winner of the W Canadian Championship will qualify to represent Canada in the Concacaf W Champions Cup, creating a new domestic pathway to regional and global club competition. The Concacaf W Champions Cup is the region's premier women's club competition and, beginning in 2027, Canada will have one representative in the tournament.
With the W Canadian Championship quarterfinal decided by a single knockout match, Sunday's result will determine who advances to the semifinals in 2027. Every match carries added significance as AFC Toronto looks to make its mark in the inaugural competition and continue its pursuit of a place on the continental stage.
Newcomer Day
Alongside the action on the pitch, AFC Toronto will celebrate Newcomer Day, bringing together supporters and communities from across Toronto, highlighting soccer’s ability to create connection, belonging and community.
As part of the day, AFC Toronto will welcome new Canadian citizens to the match following a special, closed-door-pre-match citizenship ceremony hosted in partnership with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). The new citizens will also take part in the national anthem, singing their first “O Canada” as Canadian citizens.
The national anthem will be performed by emerging Toronto-based R&B, soul and jazz singer-songwriter Kibra, adding a special local touch to the matchday celebrations.
AFC Toronto will also continue its partnership with UNHCR Canada, which uses the power of sport to stand in solidarity with refugees and displaced people and promote inclusion and belonging. Fans will hear from AFC Toronto player Nyota Katembo through a special video sharing her own story of finding friendship, confidence and a sense of home through soccer after moving to a new country.

Fans can expect plenty of ways to get involved throughout the day, including:
- Toyota Cheer It Forward: Bring your loudest cheer to the Toyota activation in Footy Festival and help unlock soccer ball donations for local youth programs. Fans who complete the challenge will receive Toyota stickers and a rally towel to take home. The energy will continue at halftime with the Cheer It Forward Halftime Cheer Rally presented by Toyota, as the stadium joins together to help put soccer balls in the hands of local youth.

- Ontario SPCA & Humane Society: Pick up a limited-edition AFC Toronto x Ontario SPCA pet bandana at either merchandise stand, with 100% of proceeds going to the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society to support animals in need.
- Canadian Street Soccer Association: Learn more about the organization’s work creating free and safe spaces for people who experience barriers to playing sport, including homelessness, mental health challenges and social isolation.
- Vermillion Vanguard: Stop by the supporters group activation to learn more and sign up for membership for the 2027 season.
- Toronto music star Shawn Desman will also be in attendance to cheer on AFC Toronto.
Give Back on Matchday
As part of AFC Toronto’s Soccer for Cancer campaign with the Canadian Cancer Society, fans will also have the opportunity to make an on-site donation supporting breast cancer research and cancer support programs and services.
Fans can donate at the match on October 4 as AFC Toronto launches its fundraising efforts throughout October, leading into the club’s marquee Soccer for Cancer match on October 18 at BMO Field.
